Pomegranate juice: beyond antioxidants. The potential benefits for patients on dialysis.
Pomegranate juice reduces tissue damage, inflammation and infection.
research done in recent years have supported the many health benefits of pomegranate juice, a good source of antioxidants and is able to lower cholesterol blood pressure, especially in patients with diabetes and hypertension. A preliminary study, presented at the American Society of Nephrology, indicates that you can prevent a number of complications in patients with kidney disease on dialysis, including the high rate of morbidity due to infections and cardiovascular events.
Batya Kristal's Western Galilee Hospital, and Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Israel) studied, along with other Israeli doctor ni, reactions 101 dialysis patients who were given pomegranate juice or other beverage placebo beginning of each dialysis session, three times a week for one year.
Laboratory tests have shown that patients who drank pomegranate juice significantly reduced the inflammation and minimize the damage of oxidative stress caused by free radicals. In addition, pomegranate juice drinkers showed over time a lower likelihood of hospitalization because of infection. These results confirm other studies indicating that pomegranate juice has strong antioxidant properties.
Recent analysis of data revealed that those who drank pomegranate juice also showed an improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, such as reducing blood pressure, improved lipid profile and fewer cardiovascular event ari, highlighting a much more heart healthy. These results are consistent with other populations studied and are particularly important for patients on hemodialysis, because the majority of patients with kidney disease are subject to deaths caused by cardiovas colar related events or infections.
The authors bulls, the results suggest that drinking a controlled amount of pomegranate juice with a content security and control of potassium may help reduce the complications that often occur in patients dialysis. It is important c ith risk which involves the overhead of potassi or, especially in chronic kidney disease ( chronic kidney disease - CKD ) in patients with dietary restriction of potassium .
