The antioxidant qualities of breast milk

Research indicates that the breast milk of a pre-term pregnancies has less antioxidants.

A new scientific study says that milk from mothers with pre-term contains a low concentration of coenzyme Q10 an essential component of the electron transport chain.

Researchers at the University of Granada and San Cecilio University Hospital have used a sample of 30 mothers with 15 to complete gestation and 15 become mothers early.

This study relied on the participation of a group of researchers at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology and Jose Mataix collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics, University Hospital San Cecilio of Granada, Spain.

The main objective of the study was to analyze the variation of the concentration of coenzyme Q10 in the three stages of breast milk (colostrum, transitional and mature milk). The second aim was to determine if the breast milk of gestation to term and pre-pregnancy to term had different concentrations of Q10.

The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire on their eating habits that was developed by the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology University Jose Mataix Grenada.

Milk samples were also examined to determine the concentrations of other parameters such as coenzyme Q, tocopherol (isomers a, GED) and total antioxidant capacity of breast milk.

The study found that concentrations of CoQ10 in the mothers completed is 75% higher than in mothers with pre-term. Similar results were obtained tocopherol.
